Artist FAQs

I. Payments, Money and Downloadable tracks
How much money do I get from Fan Subscriptions?

We have tried to price it so that as much as possible goes straight to you the Artist.
We keep the essential costs of hosting your mBaSo as low as we can, so that
more than two thirds of the revenue can go to you the Artist!
(the rest of the money is paid as VAT and transaction charges)

How do I get Paid?

Choose where you would like to get paid:
1) straight into your bank account
2) onto a debit/credit card
3) into your Paypal account
4) into your Moneybookers account

Enter these details in Bank, found in the My Account drop-down menu.

Please note, out of these options Paypal charges you the highest transaction fee, and Moneybookers charges you the lowest transaction fee.
We recommend setting up a Moneybookers account so you can keep as much of your money as possible, although we like to accommodate your needs and so we make it possible for you to be paid in any of the above methods.

Do I get paid royalties from my music on mBaSo?

Most of your money is paid directly to you, whilst a small percentage will be collected
by you via your royalty collecting society.  For more information on how to register to
collect your royalties, contact our Artist Advice Service advice@mbaso.com

What amounts can I earn through mBaSo?

100 fans* will earn you around £1,000 / year
500 fans* will earn you around £5,000 / year
2000 fans* will earn you around £20,000 / year

The exact amounts will vary slightly, depending on which payment plan each fan chooses and on royalty rates.
*Calculations are based on each fan subscribing for a full year.

What payment plan choices do fans have?

Fans can choose to pay by Direct Debit or Credit Card.
They can choose to pay monthly or annually.

When do I get paid?

As long as there are always at least 3 approved downloadable tracks uploaded on your mBaSo then you will be paid every month.
(Within 14 days after each month end)

What if I have not uploaded 3 approved downloadable tracks in my mBaSo?

It is your responsibility to always keep at least 3 downloadable tracks in your download queue.
This is essential to ensure an uninterrupted service to your fans.
If you don't, all further payments must be withheld until you have AT LEAST 3 APPROVED DOWNLOADABLE TRACKS in your download queue.

In this case you must ensure that you supply further tracks ASAP!!

What is a bad credit artist?

If you repeatedly drop below the 3 track threshold we may have to lower your account status to a bad credit artist.
This may result in your payments only being distributed to you quarterly.

If your account EVER drops below 2 approved downloadable tracks, it may become necessary for your account to be put in suspension, resulting in an interruption to your fans service.
It is your responsibility to avoid this at all costs, as it may result in losing your subscribing fans - an artist's most precious commodity!

Any remaining artist funds may have to be withheld indefinitely.

Why are there the '3 downloadable track' rules?

We want to provide a seamless service to your fans.  We want to ensure that fans always receive the best service possible, for the sake of ALL mBaSo Artists.

In order to ensure that fans will always receive the service they expect from our Artists, we have to ensure that all Artists can deliver the service they promise.  This protects our other mBaSo Artists who always deliver the service their fans deserve, and ensure fans can continue receive a great service from mBaSo.

By sticking to this simple rule as an Artist, you will enjoy all the benefits that mBaSo has to offer, for a rewarding experience with your fans, on our journey together into this new future for the music industry.

What is an approved downloadable track?

We have to ensure that all tracks offered as downloads to fans are of broadcast quality.

It is your responsibility to ensure that:

a) It is your own copyright, and does not infringe on any 3rd party copyrights (ie is not a cover or containing 3rd party samples)
If it does contain 3rd party copyright you must supply documentation (usually MCPS certificate) to show you have permission to release it commercially

b) It is a new exclusive track, i.e. has not previously been made available for purchase or download.
(acoustic versions, remixes and live tacks which your fans will find significantly different from previous tracks may be used, as long as you believe your fans will be getting value for money - ultimately they are the ones you want to satisfy and provide a fantastic service to, so that they keep subscribing and recommending you to friends)

How long does it take for tracks in my download queue to be approved?

We approve/decline tracks within 14 days of submission, although we aim to do this within shorter timeframes.

Please ensure you allow enough time for our review process, to ensure that there are always AT LEAST 3 APPROVED downloadable tracks in your download queue at all times.
This will avoid delays in payments to you.

How many downloadable tracks do you recommend having in the download queue?

You can have as many tracks as you like in the downloadable queue.

Therefore we recommend having as many more than 3 as you can, as this will ensure that your payments will never be delayed.

Most artists should aim to have 6-12 approved tracks in their download queue.

Having more than 12 is especially useful if you are planning to go on tour and will be out of the studio for extended periods of time.

What if I am going on tour and will be out of the recording studio for a while?

Plan ahead. If you know you will be out of the studio, ensure you have enough recorded tracks uploaded and approved in your download queue to ensure you will continue to get paid and provide an uninterrupted service to your fans.

Ideally plan to have 12 tracks in your download queue at all times.

What is my Download Queue?

Your download queue is the list of approved downloadable tracks, each waiting their turn for release to your fans as your monthly download.

Can I change the order of the download queue?

Yes, you can change the order of tracks in your download queue at any time.
The track in position 1 (i.e. the track waiting to be released to your fans for download next) can change its position in the queue until 3 working days before its release date, at which time it will become fixed in the number 1 position.

Can I release the tracks outside of mBaSo?

Any downloadable tracks that you release through mBaSo can later be made available anywhere else you choose.

However, this can only be done after the month that the track is available as your mBaSo download has ended .  You can still use the tracks for your next album / EP, or release it as a single.  As long as this is done AFTER the track's download month on mBaSo.  During the time it is your mBaSo monthly download, it cannot currently be or previously have been available for purchase or download

This is to ensure that your SuperFans are treated with exclusivity, to reward them for their loyalty and ongoing financial support of your music career.

mBaSo is also the perfect way to fund the recording of your next album in advance, and ensure a certain level of sales before you even release it.

If I release it to my SuperFans first on mBaSo, will my sales count towards the charts?

No, not currently.  mBaSo is mainly aimed at independent artists.  If you are looking for instant chart success, mBaSo may not be the best place for you.  However if you want to build a loyal and strong fanbase who will buy everything you record, mBaSo is definitely the right place for you!

Through mBaSo, your fans will feel ownership in your journey and form a special connection with your music, thus making them likely to share and recommend it to friends.  mBaSo is an opportunity to nurture this connection, spreading your music to true music fans who appreciate the value of supporting the Artists they love.  Our Artists believe there is tremendous worth in this.

What is broadcast quality?

Broadcast quality is recorded quality that you would hear on the radio.  Generally this means that the track has undergone mastering.  Occasionally it is possible to get this quality on home recordings, although we recommend getting your tracks mastered so that fans will enjoy quality comparable to other tracks in their music collection.

What is mastering?

During Matering, a track is produced using tools such as compression, EQ and other effects.
Usually it requires the skill of a trained sound engineer.
If you would like to enquire about one of our partners and to qualify for reduced rates for mastering services contact us at
mastering@mbaso.com

Why must Artists fill out the questionnaire to apply?

To be successful on mBaSo, you need two key ingredients:
1) you need to write and record music regularly.
2) you need to have a reliable core to your fanbase.

mBaSo will empower you to create more of both of these key musical ambitions.  Before we begin, we need to ensure that you have a solid foundation on which to build your mBaSo.  The questionnaire helps us assess whether you are ready for your own mBaSo.

What is my Spotlight Page?

Your Spotlight Page is your shop window.  It is your page which is available to the public, to introduce them to your music and entice them to subscribe to you.

What is on my Spotlight Page?

Your Spotlight Page has 3 Public Tracks that can be streamed by anyone.  mBaSo Fans can add these public tracks to their mBaSo Playlist, even if they are not yet subscribed to your mBaSo.  This allows them to get to know your music better before subscribing, and is a great way for you to reach new fans. They can also add you to their Wishlist.

On your Spotlight page there are basic stats about your mBaSo, plus City, Country, Genre, and links to your other Websites.  There is a short biog for you to write your best taglines, quotes, and summary of your music and career.

There is also a welcome video for you to talk to your potential subscribers and tell them what they will find on your mBaSo, why it's the best place for them to get your music first and support you on your road to success, as well as a chance to introduce yourself to potential new fans.

Why is the welcome video uploaded via my Youtube channel and not directly on mBaSo like the Backstage Videos?

This is part of your marketing strategy.  To fund your music career, you want to attract as many fans as possible to sign up to your mBaSo.  YouTube has a great viral community, and your welcome video tells the world what they will find on your mBaSo and why it's the best place for them to get your newest music and interact with you.  YouTube enables you to get this message out to a wider audience and invite them to join you on mBaSo.

What is 'Story' in my Backstage Area?

Story is a chance for you to tell your full biography, with all the details that you can't include in short press releases or website summaries.  Shorter biographies only allow an outline of the highlights to draw new listeners in.  But there is so much more to tell.  On mBaSo your Fans want to know more about you and get under the superficial layers and it's an opportunity to nurture your special relationships with your SuperFans.  Some ideas… tell them about your first instrument, how you got into music, the first record you bought, your favourite experience as an Artist …show them the people behind the music.

How are 'Photos' organised?

Photos are grouped in Galleries.  You may want to create different galleries for a PR or album shoot, a particular tour or gig, fan shots, or shots from the studio.  Grouping them into galleries makes it easier for your fans to view and find particular types of photos.

What events can I list in 'Live'?

Live is a place to list not only your Live Gigs and Shows, but also details of any radio/TV appearances, or webcasts.  Any event your fans might want to know about.

Can I release pre-sale tickets to my mBaSo Fans?

Yes, you can add a URL link for Fans to buy tickets.  By adding the ticket link here before you make the ticket link public to non-subscribing Fans, you can release tickets early to your mBaSo Fans as another benefit to being your subscriber.

What tracks should I upload as BackCatalogue tracks?

In your Backstage 'Music' Tab, fans can stream and listen to 'BackCatalogue' Tracks and add them to their mBaSo playlist.  This is a place to add previously released tracks.

Can BackCatalogue tracks be downloaded?

In your Backstage 'Music' Tab, fans can stream and listen to 'BackCatalogue' Tracks and add them to their mBaSo playlist.  This is a place to add previously released tracks.

Should I upload my entire BackCatalogue to my mBaSo?

It is up to you how many of your previously released tracks you upload.  You have the option to upload all of your previous albums tracks.  This allows your mBaSo fans to stream any of your music from any device.  The ability to stream any of your Catalogue from anywhere is currently very popular with music fans.  This is an extra feature which some Artists choose to include in their mBaSo.  If you decide to offer this feature to your mBaSo Fans, you should mention this in your Spotlight Page welcome video, as an added incentive for Fans to subscribe.

Can I upload other audio as a BackCatalogue track?

You can also upload radio interviews, rare versions of songs, alternative mixes, and anything else you want to share with your SuperFans.  It is great to have at least some 'exclusive' content uploaded to this section, so Fans are encouraged to continue to subscribe to content they wouldn't be able to access anywhere else.
(Tip: Add 'exclusive' to the track title so your mBaSo fans know that only they have access to that content.)

Where do I upload tracks in progress" that I want my fans to give feedback on?"

You can also use your Backstage 'Music' Tab to showcase tracks, with rough studio tracks and mixes that you want to get feedback on, from Fans you trust.  Upload rough versions as BackCatalogue tracks, leaving them up for only a limited time whilst you are working on them, so that fans can get involved in the creative process and contribute to the direction of your music if you wish.
(Tip: Add 'contribute' to the track title so your mBaSo fans know they have the opportunity to get involved)

III. How To Get The Most Out Of Running My BackStage Area
What type of content should I upload to mBaSo?

mBaSo gives you a private area to hang out with your SuperFans.  It is an opportunity to share content that you might not feel is appropriate for listeners hearing your music for the first time, but rather for Fans to whom you want to give access to the behind-the-scenes areas of your life.

For example, you can use the Videos to upload video diaries, inside the recording studio, the soundcheck before the gig, or the journey to get there.  It's a great opportunity to give your most loyal Fans more insight into your life, and to post material that might be more revealing about your music and creative process than on other public video sites.
(please note: It is your responsibility to ensure that all content uploaded is suitable for all ages, and does not contain inappropriate language, indecency or illegal activity.)

How often should I upload new content?

As well as the monthly download track, we recommend you upload a new video every month.  Examples could be rare footage from a live show, an exclusive acoustic performance, or the latest edition of your video diary.

We also recommend adding a new blog post at least once a month.  Within the blog post you could also talk about that month's download track and the inspiration behind writing the song, or other anecdotes.

Will mBaSo update my other social networking sites, so I don't have to manage multiple sites?

Yes.  You can sync your mBaSo with many of your other social networking sites (Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, etc) so that when you upload new content to mBaSo it sends a teaser line to those Feeds.

What is a teaser line?

A teaser line might be the first line of your blog post, or the title of your latest video.  It automatically posts to other social network sites' feeds (if you have synced your accounts).  The teaser line has a link to that piece of content on mBaSo.

If a subscribing Fan clicks the link it takes them straight to that content on mBaSo.  If a non-subscriber clicks the link it takes them to your mBaSo Spotlight Page, with an overlay which explains to them that to view the rest of the content they must Subscribe to your mBaSo Backstage Area.

Why are teaser lines so important?

We strongly recommend that you link your mBaSo to your other social networking sites, which means a Teaser Line will get posted to that site every time you post new content on your mBaSo.
This is crucial so that:

1) Your mBaSo receives maximum exposure to your non-subscribing fans and the wider world, to encourage more people to support you  and your music by subscribing so that they can access that juicy content they are currently missing out on.

2) You don't have to spend time updating multiple sites with your latest news as this is done automatically for you, and you can concentrate on making more music and rewarding fans that love your music enough to support you financially, whilst still reaching out regularly to the wider world and keeping your online presence buzzing.

Can I message or send an email to all my Fans?

Yes, you can send tailored emails to your Fans.  You can choose to send a message to all your Fans or just in specific Cities or Countries, for example if you are touring in their area. You can also send individual messages to Fans.  The message also gets sent out to the Fans as an email, so they can either view it directly in their email inbox or in their mBaSo Inbox.

Most Mass Mailing providers charge for this service. On mBaSo is this Free?

Yes.  We include the costs of mass mailing your subscribing fans in our service, so it is FREE to you the Artist.  This is another benefit of mBaSo as it saves you paying for those expensive mass mailing services.  You may still want to continue an email list outside of mBaSo as a way of contacting your non-subscribing fans, but if you are charged per email address as many do, you can save on some of those costs.

Can Fans opt out of receiving these messages?

Some Fans may only want to receive your music downloads and do not want regular news.  We respect our Fans privacy if they choose this option.  However most Fans will want to hear from you.

How often should we contact our Fans?

We recommend only contacting Fans via Message once or twice a month.  If Fans are receiving too many emails they may opt out of receiving messages, so use your judgement about the appropriate amount of contact.  Fans who want to hear from you more often will log into mBaSo and talk to you there.

Do Fans automatically receive an email when their new Download Track is available?

Yes, all Fans receive a notification about their new Download Track.

Do Fans receive an email when I post new content?

Yes, most of your Fans will receive an email when you post a new blog post, unless they have chosen not to.
Notifications about new videos, photos, live dates and BackCatalogue tracks however must be opted into by Fans.  They can choose to receive these as daily, weekly, or monthly updates.

What is 'Chat'?

In 'Chat' all the latest comments about your content are brought into one place, so you can easily keep up with the latest conversations and respond to what your fans are saying.  This is particularly useful when there is a high volume of conversations, and helps you to keep track.  We designed it to make it easy to respond to your Fans effectively, without the need to trawl the site and individual content looking for the latest comments.

How is 'Chat' different to the activity feed?

In 'Chat' it is easier to browse and respond to the most recent comments from Fans as it lists only the latest comments without all the previous comments, whereas Feed includes all the comments for that content.  In Chat, on the left there are also links to your original content which you can click through to if you want to view the entire conversation in one place.

What about 'Exclusive Offers'?

We are working on bringing new features to the site, including ticket and merchandising facilities, for you to offer your mBaSo fans special offers, rewarding them for their loyalty and for supporting you and your music.

Until those features are officially launched, as an Artist you can run exclusive competitions for your mBaSo Fans via your mBaSo blog and messaging facilities.

We encourage you to reward your fans in this way, so that they feel special as one of your loyal fans, receiving privileged opportunities.  Make them feel valued and as appreciated as they are.

What's the best way to get my fans involved in the creative process?

You can upload tracks exclusively for your mBaSo fans to listen and stream as 'BackCatalgue Tracks'.  Whilst this area is largely used for previously released material and exclusive audio such as radio interviews, rare acoustic versions etc you can also use this to upload tracks which are still works in progress.  You can then invite your mBaSo fans to give feedback on the track, perhaps choose between two mixes, or suggest other instruments, or different song structures.  On the 'Music' Player, each track has a link through to its own content page, with its own URL.  Here fans can write comments and have conversations about the track.

As an Artist on other sites I have received large amounts of spam messages. How does mBaSo protect me from this?

On mBaSo you can only be contacted by Fans who pay to subscribe to your mBaSo.  This automatically filters out anyone who is not willing to pay for your music.  Therefore freeing you up to focus only on those that do.  You can also receive messages from other mBaSo Artists but only if you choose to.

What happens if a Fan makes a comment that I consider to be Spam?

Any comments made by Fans in your Backstage Area can be deleted by you as the Artist.

What happens if a Fan continues to write inappropriate comments?

If there is a particular Fan who's behaviour is repeatedly causing concern, please let us know through the 'contact us' (hyperlink) page including any details which would be helpful to us in investigating the matter.  You can request to have them blocked from subscribing to your mBaSo.  Additionally if, as a result of the enquiry, they are found to be in violation of the Fan Terms and Conditions, the offending Fan could be removed from mBaSo entirely.

Can I receive private messages from my mBaSo Fans?

Fans who subscribe to your mBaSo can send you private messages to your mBaSo inbox.  You can activate alerts which will also send you the message in full as an email.  If you would like to turn off private messaging from your Fans, so they only write to you via backstage comments, let us know through our contact page (hyperlink to contact page).

Can I receive private messages from other mBaSo Artists?

You can send / receive messages to / from other mBaSo Artists.  We allow these interactions between Artists so that mBaSo Artists can contact each other about touring together, collaborations, etc.  If however you would prefer to only use mBaSo to interact with your subscribing Fans, you can opt out of this in your message privacy settings.

Can I receive private messages from non-subscribing mBaSo Fans?

No. Only subscribing Fans can send you messages on mBaSo.  This is to protect you from receiving high volumes of unwanted messages from Fans who are not paying for your music, to free up your time and your mBaSo inbox to concentrate on and reward those Fans who do support you and subscribe.

This distinction and reducing spam is an essential core value of mBaSo, and what makes us different to most other social music sites.  On mBaSo it is all about freeing up your time to concentrate on making music and interacting with Fans who value your music enough to financially support you, so you can afford to keep making more.
